George Mac Donald   (1824 - 1905)

George Mac Donald was one of the most original and imaginative writers of the nineteenth century.
Best known for his fantasy and children's stories it is in the realms of spiritual insight that he continues to exert remarkable influence. C. S. Lewis said of him:-

"I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ himself."

In his day he was a very popular preacher teaching  with an authority all of his  own and occasionally delighting the congregation by reading one of his fairy stories from the pulpit.

The heart of his insight and theology was that God is to be known and found as Loving Father.

One of his best known works was At the Back of the North Wind with illustrations by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes.

His novels Lilith and Phantastes are among the most remarkable fantasy stories in English literature. Among his many admirers were G. K. Chesterton. J. R. R. Tolkein and the Inklings.

Although largely forgotten by the mid 20th century today there is a growing recognition and interest in his works almost all of which are still in publication.
